Paolo Gorini (1813-1881) has been an unconventional personage of science. He was perfectly in line with the coeval characteristics of the "Scapigliatura" movement, and he is often transfigured in literary terms that, though fascinating, are at times misleading and don’t describe his truer image of scientist and scholar.

His studies
Geologist, volcanologist, mathematician and anatomic preparer, Gorini was a scientist distant from the specific ramifications of Positivism. He embraced a real "union of the scientific arts" that Gorini himself romantically saw as a faith in pure research and the future of mankind.

The collection
The collection gathers a good part of the animal and human anatomical preparations created by Paolo Gorini between 1834 and 1881. The scientist's interests were primarily focused on the most common pathologies of his time, as many specimens demonstrate, and on his efforts to preserve decaying bodies.
